‘The Rise of Afrobeats‘ seems to be a phrase that rattles cages as for many, Afrobeats has been growing organically since the 60’s. For the new generation of young Africans however, artists such as Sarkodie, Atumpan, Iyanya and Flavour to name but a few; are the epitome of the modern Afrobeats movement which is currently ravaging some of the hippiest underground clubs in London.
Rachel Funmilola Garton, known by her stage name Lola Rae, is a twenty one years old British Nigerian artist who emerged on the scene following an appearance on Britain’s Got talent in 2010. After impressing none other than Simon Cowell and turning down an invitation to X-factor UK in order to pave her own musical journey, Lola Rae has proven that she is determined to make a mark on the music scene. She released the P2J-produced R&B opus entitled “High (Wanting More)”, showcasing her enchanting vocal abilities and “Watch My Ting Go”, an Afro-pop dance floor filler to an accolade of praise by Afrobeats lovers of the UK underground scene.
“Watch My Ting Go'” is a melting pot of Western R&B influences with contemporary Nigerian and Ghanaian pop music. The perfect up tempo dance track makes me want to get up and dance every time I hear it. It is my Friday evening jam; the right rhythm to welcome the weekend.
Have a good one.
