Salsa & live music at Floridita

I hibernated for most part of the festive season with family, spending New Year’s Eve on the South Bank for the fireworks display, however it did not feel like “New Year’s” without a little adult time involving dancing, good ambiance and music.

Floridita is an eccentric and gorgeously quirky bijoux nestled in the heart of London’s Soho, a perfect destination for live music, exceptional food and irresistible rum charm; reason enough to visit this delightful spot.

Not much of a drinker, but summoned to a ‘shot’ to “get me started” – which I ended up sharing because I could not finish by the way – I hit the dance floor almost instantly upon our arrival. If you are looking for a spot to kick off your heels and relax amidst the beats of el flamenco?  la rumba and salsa, then Floridita is not the place for you. However, if like me, you like having a good time, then it is certainly a delight to behold.

Ok, so you might be upstaged by random ‘El Papi!’ or ‘La caliente senorita’ , whose ballroom dancing skills would give any contestant on Celebrity Strictly Come Dancing a run for their money. So be prepared! Warm-up that waist-line. Practice before attending. I was not given that luxury!

Once the live band leaves, the DJ takes center stage, playing the very best in pop music, dance hits and R&B… with a twist: he beats the drum – which is meticulously positioned by his side – to every single song; making a Katie Perry song sound like a slice of Havana!

I  settled for  bar snack food  since I was not feeling too hungry. My choices were the sweet potato chips and the marinated olives. I was also given free tortilla chips. Those contrasting flavours lingering through my mouth were an absolute revelation! Floridita’s À la carte menu looks like a culinary adventure – and one worth taking.

You can prepare by planning your evening. See their Live Music Guide for the various bands to feature in the coming few months. You will walk away with a new found appreciation. Now I’m off to sign up to a salsa dance class!
